Three Stages of Acquiring a Mining Claim in Zimbabwe
Follow this comprehensive process to legally acquire and register your mining claim
ππΊοΈ Stage 1: Prospecting
Prospecting Licence Requirements
A prospecting licence is required at this stage and it is acquired at the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development offices.
π Required Documents:
- π National ID or company documents
- π° Payment of gazetted fee
β³ Validity Period
The prospecting licence is valid for two (2) years.
π Rights Acquired
As a holder of a Prospecting licence you acquire the rights of prospecting and pegging mining claims within the designated exploration area specified in your licence.
β οΈ Important Limitations
- License is valid for a specific designated area, not nationwide
- Applied for at provincial offices for that province
- Certain areas are not open to prospecting (existing mines, cultivated land, dams)
- Landowner notification required; written consent needed for farms under 100 hectares
- For larger exclusive areas, an Exclusive Prospecting Order (EPO) is required

ππ§ Stage 2: Pegging
Professional Pegging Process
π€ Agent Appointment
When a Prospecting Licence holder has identified a mineral deposit that he/she is interested in, he/she appoints an agent or an Approved Prospector to peg on his/her behalf.
π©π’ Physical Pegging Requirements
- The agent is required to physically peg the area by marking the deposit with a Discovery peg
- Post Prospecting, Discovery and Registration Notices on the ground
- The notices must be posted in a conspicuous manner to alert other prospectors
β¨ Claim Limitations
Each Prospecting Licence can peg up to a maximum of 10 claims at 1Ha each for precious metals.

βοΈβ Stage 3: Registration
Application for Registration
An application for registration must be submitted to the Provincial Mining Director.
π Required Attachments (in triplicate):
- π Prospecting licences
- π Prospecting Notice
- π Discovery Notice (Base Minerals)
- βοΈ Notification of intention to prospect to the landowner
- πΊοΈ A map in triplicate to the scale of 1:25000
πβοΈπ³ Final Approval
If the Provincial Mining Director is satisfied that all pegging procedures have been followed, he shall issue a certificate of registration upon payment of a gazetted fee. This allows the holder to start mining operations subject to meeting other obligations like Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).
